The police issued 11.8 million traffic fines last year, up 160,000 on 2008, reports ANP news service on Friday.


The number of fines for speeding in 2009 were at around the same level as the previous year but more motorists were caught for using mobile phones (without hands-free devices), driving through red traffic lights and not wearing safety belts.
The number of parking fines soared from around 41,000 in 2008 to over 920,000 last year, according to ANP.
