Report on support for Iraq war out today
The government commission which has been investigating the Netherlands’ support for the Iraq war is expected to publish its findings later this morning.
The report is said to run to several hundred pages and has been long-awaited by MPs.
The Netherlands gave political but not military support to the invasion, a decision largely based on claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Those claims later turned out to be false.
Pressure mounted on the government to hold a formal parliamentary inquiry into Iraq in early 2009 after a string of revelations – particularly about security service failings. Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende eventually agreed to set up a commission to investigate events instead.
Christian Democrats
His Christian Democrat party have a lot riding on the outcome. The CDA were strong backers of the invasion. The current foreign affairs minister, Maxime Verhagen, was parliamentary CDA leader and Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who went on to be secretary general of Nato, was foreign minister.
Some claim that De Hoop Scheffer owed his Nato appointment to the Dutch decision to back the Americans.
The formal handing over of the report by commission chairman and top lawyer Willbrord Davids will be broadcast live on tv this morning.
