Minister questions hospital postcode policy

Health minister Ab Klink has asked Maastricht University’s teaching hospital (AZM) to explain why some patients are being turned away because they have the wrong postcode.

The AZM has introduced a policy of not treating patients with very rare immune disorders if they don’t live near enough to the hospital. It says the postcode policy is necessary to keep treatment costs within its budget.
Klink told tv show Buitenhof on Sunday night he wanted an explanation because he had allocated extra money to teaching hospitals to carry out complicated treatments.
