Man jailed for throwing firework at police

A 24-year-old man from Hoek van Holland has been jailed for two months for throwing a firework at riot police during the New Year celebrations.

The man, who was also given two year’s probation, is to appeal against the sentence. He was tried in a fast-track court set up to administer speedy justice to people arrested during the festivities.
Lawyers say the fast-track system is too quick because there is not enough time to view all the evidence or establish a proper defence.
Another man has been given two weeks in jail, 50 hours community service and fined for insulting and threatening another police officer. A third was given 50 hours of community service for destroying a security camera and a breaking a sport hall window.
Over 400 people were arrested in total, but only a handful will end up in court. Most of the cases will be settled directly by police fines.
Manageable
Home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst told Radio 1 news she wanted to see jail terms and heavy fines for people who ‘take pleasure in agressive behaviour and rioting’ during the New Year festivities.
‘If I look at the figures, it was not a quiet night. It was manageable,’ she said.
According to preliminary figures, there were 2,420 reported incidents, compared with 2,753 in 2008. There were 871 fires and 138 instances of violence against emergency service workers.
The definitive report will be published on January 6.
Meanwhile, the 54-year-old man who was seriously hurt while taking part in carbidschieten – making explosions in milk churns using carbon carbide – has died of his injuries, news agency ANP reports.
