Finance minister backs Obama bank plan
Finance minister Wouter Bos is fully behind American president Barack Obama’s plans to curb the activities of the biggest US banks, the NRC reports on Monday.
In an interview with the paper, Bos says he is writing to his US counterpart Tim Geithner to give his support and that the letter includes a commitment to raise the issue within the Europe Commission.
Together with Geithner, Bos said he hopes to get the issue on the agenda of the next G20 meeting. ‘We have to manage it… other countries still have not found a way to make sure the taxpayer does not end up footing the bill for the financial sector,’ the paper quotes Bos as saying.
The NRC say Bos is the first European finance minister to put his weight firmly behind Obama’s concrete proposals.
According to the BBC, Obama plans to limit the size of banks and impose restrictions on risky trading. Retail banks will also be banned from using their own money in investments. Instead, they would be limited to investing their customers’ funds.
