Extreme weather on the way Saturday night

The KNMI weather bureau has issued an extreme weather warning for the weekend, with blizzards possible in the north on Saturday night.

Light snow in the southeast on Saturday will spread northwest during the day and strong winds, especially in coastal areas, could lead to heavy drifting in some places, the KNMI said.
Temperatures during the day will remain just below zero, but it will feel much colder in the northeasterly winds. Gale force 6 is expected in the Wadden Sea area, where the first ice walks of the winter season have been planned.
Sunday will be overcast with light snow flurries at times and temperatures around zero. But again, it will feel much colder in the strong winds.
Next week, it will get colder again, the KNMI said.
Skating
Despite the severe weather warning, the organisers of three outdoor skating tours are expecting thousands of people to turn up, news agency ANP reports.
The Loosdrechtse lakes near Tienhoven are particularly busy as is the Henschotermeer east of Utrecht. There has not been as much snow in the central part of the country so the ice is of better quality, ANP said.
‘Skating enthusiasts have been waiting impatiently to get going,’ a spokesman for the KNSB skating association said.
The KNSB is advising people who brave the snow to wear goggles and layers of thermal clothing and not to go skating alone.
Roads and rail
Dutch Rail (NS) is operating reduced services at the weekend because of the weather warning. Travelers are being urged to monitor the NS website for the latest situation.
By 3pm Saturday, there were no reports of any problems on the roads.
