Credit crisis commission starts work
The parliamentary commission set up to examine the Dutch financial system and the causes and effects of the credit crisis begins public hearings on Monday.
In total, three weeks of hearings are planned, and ‘anyone who is anyone’ in the financial world is scheduled to appear, the Telegraaf reports.
On Monday, Coen Teulings, head of the government’s macro economic bureau CPB will take the stand, followed by professor Sweder van Wijnberge and former bankers Onno Ruding and Bert Bruggink.
Later, former finance minister Gerrit Zalm, current finance minister Wouter Bos and head of the central bank Nout Wellink will also be heard, the Telegraaf reports.
The committee is chaired by Socialist Party MP Jan de Wit and has been carrying out document reviews and interviews with experts since the summer.
MPs demanded the review following concerns that they were being kept in the dark about cabinet policy. In particular, there is confusion about how much money ministers have put into ABN Amro and Fortis banks, Trouw said.
