Action plan needed for Eastern Europeans

An action plan is needed before the summer to cope with the problems caused by the influx of Poles, Bulgarians and Romanians in some parts of Rotterdam, the Hague and Schiedam, integration minister Eberhard van der Laan is quoted as saying in Wednesday’s Volkskrant.

The farming and greenhouse industry in the west of the country is attracting so many newcomers that steps need to be taken to reduce the nuisance, the paper quotes him as saying. International labour relations experts and the growers themselves have been invited to take part in the talks.
There are ‘streets with 20 Poles in one house, where the curtains are closed during the day,’ the minister told the paper. ‘Antilleans who come to deal drugs. We know these patterns and it is our duty to make this manageable. The tomato and asparagus growers who benefit from this labour are responsible as well.’
MPs are due to debate goverment urban renewal efforts later today.
