Cross must be hidden, tram driver told

An Amsterdam tram driver has lost his court case against the city council’s transport department for banning him from wearing a chain with a cross while on duty.

The court said the public transport company’s rules on wearing a uniform, safety and a professional appearance are not unreasonable. In addition, all necklaces are banned, not just those with religious symbols, the court said.
The man went to court claiming he was being discriminated against because Muslim women are allowed to wear a head scarf while on duty.
