Organic mince is the greenest and most animal friendly meat you can eat, according to a ranking of 16 meat and meat replacement products drawn up by environmental and animal welfare organisations.
Quorn, made from edible fungus, topped the list of protein-rich foodstuffs in terms of its effect on the environment and animal welfare.
Mince is a high scorer because it is made from dairy cows and is therefore a bi-product of the dairy industry, the groups said.
Bottom of the list is conventional beef. Raising cattle for beef production not only requires a lot of grass and other foodstuffs, but the animals themselves produce a lot of methane, which is a greenhouse gas, environmental advisor Hans Blonk told the Volkskrant.
