Budget: Wilders calls for new elections
The cabinet has totally lost its way and should be dismissed, said Geert Wilders, the controversial leader of the anti-immigration PVV, in an initial reaction to next year’s budget plans announced on Tuesday.
‘How dare the cabinet take measures against the ordinary citizen while it is spending billions on banks and left-wing hobbies. Pots of money are being thrown away on more asylum-seekers and immigrants, development aid and Vogelaarwijken [run-down districts designated for urban renewal]. That is unrealistic and anti-social,’ he is quoted as saying.
Wilders, whose party has nine of the 150 seats in parliament, is also against the government’s plans to increase the pension age from 65 to 67.
The PVV has drawn up an alternative budget for 2010. This includes lowering income taxes, spending more on care for the elderly and the police. These measures would be paid for by cutting spending on ‘left-wing hobbies and subsidies’, said Wilders.
