US modern art expert to head Stedelijk

American Ann Goldstein has been appointed the new head of Amsterdam’s Stedelijk modern art gallery from January 2010.

Goldstein, who is currently senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA), will succeed Gijs van Tuyl who has headed the museum since 2005.
The Stedelijk said Goldstein has played an important role in developing MOCA into a museum of international importance. She worked for the Californian institution for 25 years.
Some 31 people. most of them from abroad, applied for the Stedelijk, Alexander Ribbink of the museum’s supervisory board told the NRC. Five candidates were shortlisted – four women and four foreigners, the paper said.
The Stedelijk is currently closed for a major overhaul but is expected to reopen next spring.
‘This is a wonderful opportunity to work with an institution that has an extraordinary collection, a remarkable history of exhibitions and is poised after a period of renovation to reposition itself as one of the world’s great museums,’ Goldstein told the Los Angeles Times.
