Emergency passport not enough for US

Immigration police are warning travellers to the US that the emergency Dutch passports issued to people who have lost their travel documents will not get them into the US, news agency ANP reports.

The emergency passports do not contain the microchip which passports need to have to ensure entry into the US, ANP said.
Last summer some 200 people applied for an emergency passport to travel to the US, mainly because their existing passport had expired or they only had an ID card.
In addition, children must also have their own passports to travel to the US but are not eligible for emergency documents if parents have forgotten to apply for them, police said.
The speed with which the US has introduced the new requirements make the warning necessary, spokesman Rob Stenacker told ANP. ‘One can well imagine that not everyone is aware of the new demands,’ he said.
