Premier League champions AZ Alkmaar won the opening game of the season on Saturday by beating SC Heerenveen 5-1 to take the Johan Cruijff Cup at the Amsterdam Arena.
The game was the first with AZ Alkmaar’s new trainer, Ronald Koeman, at the helm.
Meanwhile Martin Jol, the new trainer at Ajax, was less successful at the weekend. The Amsterdam club lost 2-3 to Portugal’s Benfica on Sunday evening and drew 3-3 against Atletico Madrid on Friday in the pre-season Amsterdam Tournament.
According to sport.nl, all the goals scored against the Amsterdam team were the result of ‘serious mistakes’ in their defence which remains the club’s weak point a week before the competition starts.
