The public prosecution department has decided not to take legal action against a 17-year-old girl who gave birth to a baby boy secretly at home and dumped his body in a rubbish bin.

The dead child was later found by the girl’s mother. She was just 15 at the time of the birth.
The department said that while it considers the girl guilty of killing her child, it has decided not to prosecute on condition she continues to have treatment and cooperate with the authorities.
‘After an extensive investigation by the police and experts, it has emerged that the events and its consequences have had a severe affect on the girl and her direct surroundings… Civil law (placing her under supervision) is considered to be more appropriate,’ the department was quoted by news agency ANP as saying.
