EU elections: ‘Europe costs too much’

The cost of the Netherlands’ membership of the EU is the biggest irritant to Dutch voters, according to a poll of 1,000 people by tv station NCRV.

Voters’ second biggest bugbear is the influence of the euro on the cost of living, which annoys almost half of those polled.
Other irritations are open borders which attract foreign workers to the Netherlands and Europe’s boring image, the survey shows.
But only 13% of those polled could actually say how much the EU costs each Dutch household – €275 a year, Nos said.
The NCRV programme, Europe in 10 ergernissen (irritants), will be broadcast tonight.
