Heavyweight judo champion Dennis van der Geest (33) has decided to retire from top-level competition.

Van der Geest, who has won dozens of medals in international competitions and was world champion in 2005, says he has lost the motivation to stay at the top.
‘I feel that I can win a medal at the next world championships. But rationally, I know that the deep motivation to give all that I can is gone. Physically I feel good – that is not the problem,’ he told news agency ANP.
