One in five Dutch households claimed some form of social security benefit last year, the national statistics office CBS reports.

That means 1.2 million households depended on widows and orphans’ benefit, welfare, unemployment benefit or invalidity benefit.
Most households on benefit were single parent families and half were claiming invalidity benefit.
