‘No question of Van Gaal leaving AZ’

There is no question of coach Louis van Gaal leaving Alkmaar football club AZ before the end of his contract, club chairman Dirk Scheringa said on Monday.

Van Gaal, who took AZ to their second ever league title, is considered to be one of the main contenders to succeed Jurgen Klinsmann at Bayern Munich and had talks at the club last week, the NRC reports.
‘We are assuming that Louis will see us through the Champions League competition. He has to meet his obligations,’ Scheringa was reported as saying.
A combination of coaching AZ and a national side, such as Belgium, would be a possibility, the chairman said. He said he was not afraid that Van Gaal would leave because ‘he is a man of principles who always sees out his contract’.
Ajax problems
Meanwhile, Marco van Basten’s position at Amsterdam club Ajax remains open to question. Ajax has had a difficult season and failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Club director Rik van den Boog said on Monday Van Basten was safe. ‘Redundancy for Marco van Basten is not on the cards at the moment,’ the Telegraaf reported him as saying. ‘We will have an evaluation meeting at the end of the season.’
Failure to qualify for the Champions League in a miserable 4-0 defeat to Sparta, will cost the club millions of euros in lost box office revenue and tv rights. AZ and FC Twente will go to the European competition.
But fans are furious about Van Basten’s performance and many have called for him to be sacked.
