Frigate heads for captured ship

The Dutch frigate De Zeven Provinciƫn is heading towards the Dutch Antillean ship MV Marathon seized by pirates in the Gulf of Aden yesterday, the Volkskrant reports on Friday.

Although the navy ship is some distance away, it will be be able to intervene because Dutch interests are at stake, the justice ministry said.
The ship, which sails under the Antillean flag, has a crew of eight Ukrainians. Cargo company Amons, based in Zaandam, refused to comment on the seizing of the ship, saying it did not want to risk the lives of the crew.
The ministry spokesman said the Dutch, Antillean and Ukrainian authorities are in close contact. It is up to the shipping company to give the final go-ahead to any efforts to rescue the ship, he told the paper.
