Weapons trader freed in phone tap row

A suspected weapons trader has been freed by an Amsterdam court because recordings made of conversations made between him and his legal team were not destroyed, as required by law, Nos tv reports on Friday.

The man was arrested on the basis of information obtained from three tapped phone conversations. Information from the conversations was also used to get him to make a confession.
The court said his interests had been severely damaged by the revelations.
Last week, three defendants in an €85m tulip bulb swindle were set free because tape recordings had been kept.
