Motorway petrol stations to display prices

Motorway service stations are to be required by law to display petrol prices on roadside signs, transport minister Camiel Eurlings said on Monday.

Some 150 petrol stations on motorways do not display their prices, despite informal agreements to do so, news agency ANP reports.
But Eurlings said he will not go as far as France, where motorway signs compare prices, allowing motorists to opt for cheaper petrol. Such a system is not practical in the Netherlands because the distances travelled are so much shorter, ANP reported Eurlings as saying.
In addition, introducing such signs would cost tens of millions of euros and it is unclear if petrol prices would be pressured, Eurlings said.
