Going out at night gets more dangerous
The biggest public safety issue in Amsterdam is growing drink and drug-related violence in popular going out areas, Trouw reports on Wednesday.
Since 2003, the number of reported incidents has risen by 74%, the paper says. Violent incidents involve drunken locals, tourists and Dutch nationals from outside the city.
On a busy weekend, police will make upwards of 20 arrests around the Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein where many bars and clubs are concentrated.
Research by the crisis management institute shows that most perpetrators are white men aged over 25. Younger men of Moroccan origin form the second biggest group.
Two out of three victims are male and most incidents involve drink and drugs, the paper says.
