Dutch couple kidnapped in Yemen

The Dutch couple kidnapped in Yemen on Tuesday are in good health, the Yemen authorities told international news agencies after making contact with the kidnappers.

The man is involved in a water project in the southern city of Taiz. The couple were kidnapped while driving close to the Yemen capital Sanaa and taken to a mountainous region southeast of the capital, news agency AFP said.
The kidnappers are thought to be demanding the release of two family members who themselves were jailed for kidnapping foreigners.
‘The security authorities have taken all urgent measures to safeguard their lives and secure their release,’ Sanaa governer Noaman al-Dowaid told AFP.
Foreigners have often been kidnapped by armed tribesmen and used as bargaining chips with the government, AFP said.
