Witnesses sought to playground murder
Amsterdam police are appealing for witnesses and combing through security camera footage in an effort to indentify the man who stabbed to death a 69-year-old primary school helper on Tuesday.
A number of children witnessed the lunch time attack in a playground shared by three schools in Amsterdam Zuid.
‘My 10-year-old sister was waiting to go inside when she heard screaming. He [the victim] fell into someone’s arms and was bleeding heavily. My sister is really upset,’ one teenager who had an appointment at the school told the AD.
Staffing agency
The victim, known as Opa (granddad) Leo, had been working at the school since November, via a staffing agency which specialises in pensioners, the paper said.
‘It is a really nice job and the children are positive about having a granddad figure at school. This is a tragedy,’ said Michal van Dantzig of the staffing agency in the AD.
Police say they have no idea about the motive for the attack but it may be personal. ‘It is like looking for a needle in a haystack,’ said local police chief Leen Schaap in the AD.
Cameras
Police are now looking at camera footage from the school playground itself and nearby buildings.
The three schools, situated next to Amsterdam’s Hilton hotel, include a number of Dutch celebrities’ children. The school is also very close to the spot where property tycoon Willem Endstra was murdered and rock star and artist Herman Brood committed suicide, the AD points out.
