Tax office to get €24m from foreign assets
Some 121 people have registered their foreign savings with the tax office over the past six weeks, allowing officials to send out demands for €24m in back taxes and interest.
The highest individual demand is for €3.9m but three other people face an extra tax bill of over €1m, according to finance ministry documents.
Some 43 of the foreign asset holders had their money in a Swiss bank, followed by Belgium (27) and Luxembourg (18).
The last demands mean the tax office has raised €181m from foreign assets since it introduced an amnesty in 2001. Some 5,000 people have registered their foreign assets with the tax authorities.
The finance ministry says the sudden surge in declarations follows news that Switzerland and other countries are to reduce their banking secrecy laws.
