Maastricht mayor to halt extremist demos

Maastricht mayor Gerd Leers is not prepared to allow any more extreme political groups to demonstrate in his city, following running battles on Sunday between far right and left wing demonstrators.

Leers told local radio station L1 on Monday evening he is prepared to take his case to the highest court to prevent a recurrence of Sunday’s trouble, when 300 police officers were needed to keep the 500 demonstrators apart.
The cost to the city was ‘several hundred thousand euros’, said Leers. A total of 11 people were arrested.
