Bank savings guarantee extended
Finance minister Wouter Bos on Tuesday announced that he is extending the €100,000 guarantee on bank savings which was due to expire in October this year.
The government increased the savings guarantee scheme temporarily in October 2008 as a result of the banking crisis. Before this, people with savings accounts were only entitled to a maximum €38,000 if a bank went out of business.
No time frame was given for the extension of the guaranteee scheme.
Bos told MPs it is important that savers are offered security at a time of economic uncertainty.
