Worst neighbourhood is in Amsterdam
The Kolenkit neighbourhood in the western Amsterdam borough of Bos en Lommer is the worst district in the Netherlands, according to the housing ministry.
Kolenkit heads a list of the worst 20 run-down neighbourhoods obtained by RTL Nieuws using freedom of information legislation. These are spread over 10 cities. Rotterdam has by far the biggest number with eight, followed by Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague, all with two.
The Kolenkit neighbourhood is sandwiched between Amsterdam’s A10 ring road and a railway track and was built in the 1950s. Its name comes from its most prominent building, the Kolenkit church.
