Care fund transparency ‘unnecessary’

It is not necessary to inform parliament what the €22bn budget for extra care services is spent on, junior health minister Jet Bussemaker told Monday’s Volkskrant.

Bussemaker told the paper she only needs to inform parliament when there is a ‘marked shift’ in spending from exceptional medical expenses (AWBZ) fund.
The minister said she is aware of the details of the budget. ‘I know precisely how much goes to long-term nursing and to psychiatric care,’ she told the Volkskrant.
Last week the paper reported that it no-one had a proper overview of AWBZ funding and that the system was open to fraud.
