Ajax through, Twente out of Uefa Cup

Amsterdam’s Ajax made it through to the last 16 of the Uefa Cup competition on Thursday night with a 1-1 draw at home against Italian club Fiorentina. Ajax won the first away leg 0-1.

Ajax was 1-0 down until subsitute Leonardo scored in the 88th minute with a right-footer from just outside the penalty area.
But FC Twente’s dream is over after losing the home tie against Olympique Marseilles on penalties. Twente won the first leg 0-1 but Marseilles drew back with a 1-0 victory on Twente’s home territory.
As expected, Hamburg beat NEC Nijmegen 1-0 to add to their convincing 3-0 victory in the first leg.
Ajax is the only Dutch club to proceed into the last 16. The first leg ties take place on March 12.
