Dutch doors shut to Guantanamo prisoners
The three coalition partners, supported by the Socialists and the anti-immigration party PVV, have backed the cabinet’s apparent refusal to accept ex-prisoners from Guantanamo Bay when the camp is closed down, Trouw reports on Friday.
During a parliamentary debate on Thursday night, only the two Liberal parties (VVD and D66) and the left-wing green Groenlinks were in favour of the Netherlands helping the US to resettle prisoners, the paper said.
The government says it is up to the US itself to solve the problem of how to deal with prisoners who cannot go back to their country of origin.
The debate was held in the run-up to a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Brussels next week.
