Corus job cuts ‘short-sighted’ say unions
Unions at steel maker Corus are opposed to plans to cut 800 jobs at the company’s IJmuiden plant, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Tuesday.
In total, 3,500 Corus jobs are to go worldwide.
Most of the Dutch jobs will go at the plate steel operation, which makes steel for the car and building trades.
The unions say the decision to cut jobs is short-sighted because it will lead to a lack of expertise once the economy picks up again.
‘Corus is an exceptionally efficient profit machine and we do not think there are many workers walking round here doing nothing,’ union spokesman Nico Bogaard told news agency ANP.
