Sources in Brussels are reporting that Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende is being mentioned as a candidate for the post of chairman of the European Commission, according to Wednesday’s Telegraaf.

‘I hear everywhere that he’s well-liked and has few enemies,’ a well-placed source told the paper.
And despite saying recently that he wanted to remain active in Dutch politics until 2015, sources say Balkenende is interested in this prestigious position.
