Wild boar accidents reach a record

The number of traffic accidents involving wild boar in and around the Veluwe heathlands reached a record 122 last month, according to figures from the regional organisation Stichting Groennetwerk, reports the NRC.

The number of accidents for the first 11 months of the year is also a record, at 649. The total for 2007 was 578 which was over double the 2006 figure of 273.
Some 6,000 boar were counted in the Veluwe this summer. The provincial government of Gelderland has given permission for 5,200 to be shot, claiming the local environment can only support around 800.
