There is a good chance that it might be possible to skate on natural ice in the run up to the New Year, says the KNMI weather bureau.
From December 26 it is set to freeze at night, and temperatures will remain on or below zero during the day.
‘These are ideal conditions to allow the ice to grow quickly,’ said spokesman Harry Geurts. The KNMI predicts a 5cm thick layer of ice on water around 2m deep by the end of the month.
It will feel particularly cold in the easterly wind, but remain sunny, the long term forecast shows.
