Shopkeepers expect to book Christmas sales of some €720m this year, an increase of 3% on 2007, according to the national retail association.


While food sales will rise, retailers expect consumers to put more money into expensive presents, such as lap-tops, digital cameras, jewellery and luxury decorations.
