Top police officers are receiving thousands of euros a year in bonuses on top of their annual salary, Han Busker of the police union NPB admitted to tv news programme Nova on Wednesday night.
Top of the list is Bernard Welten, chief commissioner of Amsterdam-Amstelland police force, with €38,000 a year, he told the programme. Others are getting 25% of their annual salary.
Busker said the reward system is unfair because ordinary police officers get little in the way of bonuses for doing a good job.
Bonuses are awarded by mayors, who are technically head of the police force. Nova says Maastricht mayor Gerd Leers will be looking into the bonus system on behalf of his colleagues.
