Alkmaar club AZ heads into the football league’s winter break as premier division leader after beating NEC of Nijmegen 1-0 in a nerve-wracking home match.

AZ is still three points clear of Amsterdam’s Ajax, which beat ADO Den Haag 3-0 earlier on Sunday.
After that match, striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar said his farewell to the Dutch club. He will play the rest of the season for Real Madrid. ‘Don’t forget that the door is always open for you here,’ coach Marco van Basten said.
Third in the league going into the break is FC Twente, which drew 0-0 against fourth-placed PSV Eindhoven.
