Ajax draws final Uefa group match
Amsterdam football club Ajax managed a 2-2 draw against Slavia Prague in its final group match in the Uefa Cup competition on Wednesday night.
Coach Marco van Basten’s team had already qualified for the knock-out tournament before last night’s home match.
Rotterdam’s Feyenoord, which had lost all three of its group matches, completed its group phase with a 0-1 loss to Lech Poznan and ended last in group H. Coach Gertjan Verbeek fielded six A juniors during the game.
Police said the atmosphere was uneasy before, during and after the match and a number of arrests were made. One Polish supporter was taken to hospital.
Heerenveen lost 3-0 to England’s Portsmouth and also finishes last in its group.
This evening FC Twente and Nijmegen’s NEC are in Uefa action. Twente, through to the knock-out stage, takes on Paris Saint Germain which needs a win. NEC, which has a slim chance of qualifying, plays Udinese at home. The Italians are already through.
