Thousands of teachers go on strike

Thousands of secondary school teachers across the country are expected to go on strike on Wednesday following the breakdown of negotiations on pay and conditions.

A last-minute effort to solve the conflict on Tuesday failed and the three main teaching unions walked out of the talks.
In particular the unions are angry that earlier agreements to cut teaching hours have not been carried out. They point out that Dutch teachers work some 16 hours longer than those in other industrialised (OECD) countries.
Employers want the reduction in working hours to be implemented on a school by school basis, Trouw reports on Wednesday.
