Sharp rise in HIV infections
There has been a sharp increase in the number of new cases of HIV over the past year, largely due to a rise in unsafe practices, according to new figures from the HIV monitoring foundation.
There were 1,670 new cases of HIV infection between June 2007 and June 2008, compared with between 1,000 and 1,200 in the preceding years.
Last year, 66 people died of AIDS in the Netherlands, bringing the total since the disease was first identified to 4,344.
