Some 250,000 children were being raised in families which depend on basic welfare benefits last year, says the national statistics office CBS.

The highest percentage of welfare dependent families was in Rotterdam, where 25% of youngsters aged under 18 were being brought up on a minimum income.
The basic welfare payment is €1,273 for a married couple, plus child benefit of around €110 a month for a child aged between six and 11.
