PM returns from US after father’s death
Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende returned from the world economic summit at the weekend following the death of his father, who had been seriously sick for some time.
The PM was told his 79-year-old father had died shortly after arriving in the US for the G20 meeting on Saturday and returned home straight away.
US president George Bush is reported to have telephoned Balkenende to offer his condolences.
The leadership of the Dutch delegation at the economic summit was taken over by junior finance minister Jan Kees de Jager.
