Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende has promised the government will pay its bills on time, various media report on Tuesday.

If payment takes longer than the legal term of 45 days, suppliers will receive interest on their money, Balkenende told the small business association MKB.
He also promised that the government would consider small and medium sized businesses as suppliers more often.
