Feyenoord crashes out of Uefa Cup
Three Dutch football clubs were in Uefa action on Thursday night, which saw Rotterdam’s Feyenoord crashing out and riots involving Amsterdam’s Ajax supporters in Hamburg.
Feyenoord notched up its third straight defeat in group H, losing 3-0 to Spain’s Deportivo. Earlier the club had lost to Nancy (0-3) and CSKA Moscow (1-3).
A group of between 10 and 15 Feyenoord supporters caused trouble at half-time by ripping up seats and throwing them over crowd control fences. ‘It was too stupid for words,’ said Feyenoord director Eric Gudde. ‘What on earth possesses people to throw chairs.’
There was also crowd trouble ahead of Ajax’s 1-0 victory over Hamburg SV. Some 450 supporters were involved with scuffles with police and several hotel windows were smashed. Some 40 fans were arrested.
Ajax has six points from three matches and is almost certain to go through to the knock-out round. The club’s final match against Slavia Prague is on December 16.
In the last of Thursday’s matches Nijmegen’s NEC lost its second group match to England’s Tottenham Hotspur 0-1. The club lost earlier 3-2 to Dinamo Zagreb and must win both remaining matches against Spartak Moscow and Udinese to go through to the next stage.
