Councils agree to shut pubs early

Nine local councils in a part of the northern province of Friesland have agreed that cafes and bars within their boundaries must close their doors to new customers from midnight.


They hope the early closure will help reduce alcohol abuse by youngsters, by stimulating them to go out earlier.
The practice of ‘drinking in’ – consuming large amounts of alcohol at home or in illegal bars before a night out – is particularly common in rural areas.
