Car checks generate €100,000 in unpaid fines
Amsterdam police on Sunday clawed back €92,000 in unpaid fines and tax bills after scanning the number plates of cars parked at Amsterdam’s Arena stadium on Sunday during the football game between Ajax and PSV.
Sixteen people were arrested and 50 cars confiscated because their owners could not come up with the cash. ‘Earlier spot checks show that people going to football matches include a number with outstanding fines,’ a police spokesman told news agency ANP.
On Saturday, spot checks on 4,700 cars in Rotterdam led to €8,400 in outstanding tax bills being collected and 18 vehicles being confiscated by tax officials. The police confiscated a further three cars and handed out 43 fines for traffic offences.
