Ajax, Vitesse out of Dutch football cup
Amsterdam’s Ajax was knocked out of the Dutch football cup on Wednesday after a 1-0 third-round defeat by Volendam, which won promotion to the premier division last season.
Jack Tuyp scored the winning goal for Voldendam in the second half of extra time. Ajax was missing 11 players through injury.
The biggest upset of the night was amateur club FC Lienden’s 1-0 win at home against Arnhem’s Vitesse. Dutch football association KNVB described the match, in front of a crowd of some 2,000, as the ‘ultimate local derby’.
Meanwhile Eindhoven’s PSV was knocked out by AZ Alkmaar, also by 1-0.
