TomTom founder is top philanthropist
The thirty most generous philantropists in the Netherlands gave €132m to good causes in 2007, according to a list put together by Miljonair magazine and quoted by the Volkskrant.
The most generous giver is Pieter Geelen, founder of satnav maker TomTom who gave away €30m. Football player Clarence Seedorf is the first sportsman on the list at number ten. He gave €2m to charity.
The figures quoted by Miljonair are mainly based on estimates, says the magazine’s editor Onno Aerden, who is irritated by the ‘misplaced calvanism’ which stops people talking about their philantropy.
If you have money and you give some to good causes, you should be proud, he says, adding that it also sets a good example to others.
